Which side of a padlock has the pins?

PURELY out of curiousity, are the tumblers/pins in a padlock the same side as the teeth of the key when you insert it or somewhere else? Would I be correct in thinking that when I put a padlock key in a keyhole the teeth move the pins there and then, even before I turn it?

You are correct. With any lock, the key cuts are matched to the tumblers. The tumblers are spring loaded, and are different lengths. When the key is inserted, the cuts align the tumblers and allow the lock to turn. Hope this helps.
