What could my pet rat have died of?

My pet rat, Remy died earlier today. I came home to find him in his cage lying still, not moving so I picked him up and he started shaking. I took him to the bathroom and he slid out of my hands into the sink and started having convulsions. I picked him ip again and wrapped him in a towel and then he started to urinate with a lot of blood. After that I just held him. During that time he was still having strong convulsions and spasms and his breathing was very shallow. He was an unneutered 1 1/2 year old male and he did live with another male rat. I just don't understand why this happened because he seemed to be perfectly fine yesterday.

He may have had a kidney infection- hence the blood. Unfortunatly- its difficult to tell what happened without an autopsy from a vet. I'm so sorry for your loss.
When animals pass away, they have convulsions and muscle spasms, and may continue breathing after they have passed away. One of my boys passed away while I was holding him, and he twitched and breathed for about ten minutes after his heart had stopped.

I wrote this poem when he passed away- and it helped me to cope. I hope it helps you too (:

I was holding you last night
when you took your final breath.
I held you close as I could feel
the last beat in your chest.

You gave me a look of love-
to tell me it was alright,
to let you go to heaven
And tiptoe towards the light.

And with a final sigh,
I let you find your way.
I kissed your head and said
"I'll miss you every day.

I'll remember the life we shared
the toys and treats and more-
I'll remember the way you greeted me
when I came home through that door.

But mostly I'll remember
that you were my dearest friend
and that you would listen with eager ears
to all my odds and ends."

I know you'll be happy where you are
I know you're there to stay.
And I know in my heart of hearts-
I'll see you again, one day.
