Other Horse
Does anyone have any advice for turning a new horse out with the other resident horses?
The horses, a herd of geldings, live on 70 acres during the day but come inside at night. I was thinking i would slowly introduce him to the other horses and keep him in a nearby field for a little while. And then after a few days, turn him out with the other horses. if anyone has any advice, that would help a lot. Thanks!
Some good answers already, but I want to add please remove hind shoes, if any of the horses involved are unfortunate enough to wear iron on their feet. I've seen a horse with a broken leg from a kick, and while her owners were able to save her and rehabilitate her, it cost a lot of money and pain and the stress of stall rest (boredom is very stressful for a horse!).
If your horse has shoes on, please do some research on barefoot performance trimming. It's way more than pulling shoes - it requires a whole lifestyle protocol and a trim that is different from a typical farrier's pasture trim. It is well worth it, though - the horse is healthier and much less prone to hoof and leg problems, and with proper conditioning the horse can do anything a shod horse can do, only better. I've known about long riders covering thousands of miles, city carriage horses, barrel racers, flat racing TBs, and my own horses working on a dude ranch in the Rocky Mountains without shoes and sound as a bell.
