Double Towel


Has anyone actually traveled with their cat overseas?

Im going on a 10+ hour flight with my cat. He will be on acepromazine for the duration of the flight which slows down urinary and gastrointestinal tract. On his test run at home, he went number 1... On the plane his dose will be doubled, what are the chances he can actually hold it in for 15 hours (flight/wait times/car travel) and any tips on being prepared? I am bringing baby wipes and putting a towel on the bottom of his carrier.

I've never traveled that long with my cats, but I would suggest putting a fluffy micro fleece blanket on top of the towel. If he pees, it will go through the fleece to the towel and he will not have to lay on the wet towel. He will also be more comfortable on the soft fleece.

You might also consider using puppy pee pads rather than a towel. They have a plastic on one side so if he urinates the pee will not get all over his crate, and you can just take it out, throw it away and replace it with a clean one as soon as you get a chance.

If he poops he will just have to wait until you can clean it up. I would take an extra blanket in your carry on, so that if he does poop you can replace the blanket for him as soon as possible.

You can get an inexpensive fluffy micro fleece blanket at Target or WalMart and cut it into the appropriate size so that you can just fold it in half for his crate, and put another piece in your carry on.

Also, as soon as possible after you land give him plenty of water and make sure his kidneys are flushed out. If he is freaked out by the travel you might consider subcutaneous fluids for a day or two to make sure he is hydrated and the kidneys are being flushed. Ask your vet about this, and he can provide you with a bag of fluids and the appropriate tubing and needles, and show you how to administer it. It's easy.

Make sure he is wearing a collar with ID tags even if he has a micro chip.
